Gadgets Archives

If you love gadgets, then you probably have a relatively good idea about the kind of technology that you will be desperate to buy over during the next 12 months. But 2012 might present you with some surprises. These are just a few of the devices that will be turning heads in the coming year. From tablets and smart phones to handheld games consoles and whacky electronics, there is something for everyone.

PlayStation Vita
The February launch of the PlayStation Vita is an important one for Sony and its hordes of fans. It will be the first major portable gaming device to emerge from the company since the PlayStation Portable in 2004. The Vita is a hardware powerhouse, featuring a quad-core processor, five-inch OLED touchscreen display and plenty of media capabilities to complement its gaming credentials. It also has some unique interface features, with dual analogue sticks providing great control. There is also a secondary touch-sensitive area mounted on the back of the Vita in order to encourage game developers to dream up new ways to interact with their titles. With triple-A games such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss launching alongside the Vita, it should have a good chance of making its mark in 2012.

Apple iPad 3
Although official details relating to the iPad 3 have yet to be published, it seems relatively easy to guess what features will be included in the finished product. A higher-resolution screen that follows in the footsteps of the iPhone 4′s Retina Display seems like a certainty, as does a quad-core processor based on the A6 chipset developed by ARM. Meanwhile, the measly camera of the iPad 2 is a prime candidate for an upgrade, perhaps adding full HD 1080p video capture to the mix.

Samsung Galaxy S3
The Galaxy S3 is perhaps the most exciting mobile-phone launch of 2012. It follows on from last year’s Galaxy S2, which sold millions of units and set the bar with its dual-core processor and 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display. The Galaxy S3 is likely to up the ante with a quad-core processor and high-definition resolution on another expansive Super AMOLED Plus screen. It is thought that the screen will measure up to 4.7 inches for this iteration in order to keep up with rival models from HTC and LG.

3D Optical Finger Mouse
One of the odder gadgets destined to arrive in 2012 is this alternative to the traditional computer mouse. It fits around your index finger using a strap and then fires out a laser, letting you move the cursor while you have both hands hovering over your keyboard, which should save time while you are typing. The initial version will have a USB connection, although hopefully a wireless edition will be launched at a later date to free up your fingers even further.

Night Scope Binoculars
These night-vision binoculars are designed with a chunky plastic finish, which makes them perfect for kids and adults alike. They work perfectly well in standard daylight, but after dark a little pop-up IR emitter lets you see the world around you long after the sun has dipped below the horizon.

If you want to watch nature in your garden at night without alerting the animals to your presence, or just sneak up on your friends undetected for a bit of fun, this is the gadget for you.
