Just like many other cable providers, Suddenlink charges a monthly fee (at the time of writing being $10/month) if you are using their own modem/router combo device which provides WiFi access to the home (they call it WiFi@Home).

Many customers that don’t want to deal with cable modems and WiFi routers just get the device offered to them by Suddenlink and pay the extra monthly charge.

However, $10/month adds up very quickly to your home bills. By getting your own cable modem (and also your own WiFi router if you want) you can avoid the monthly cost. After a few months, you will recover the one-time cost of your modem/router.

In this article we have researched the best cable modems that are compatible with Suddenlink and give you our suggestions below. To make it easier for you, we have also categorized each modem according to the Internet speed tiers offered by Suddenlink.

Its important to have in mind that not every cable modem out there will work with Suddenlink internet service. That’s why we have created this guide to show you only the modems that are known to be compatible with the SL service.

Unlike Charter Spectrum for example (and other cable companies), Suddenlink does not have a public list of approved modems on their website. However, the ones we mention below will work with this Internet service as many other customers have tried them as well.

Important NOTE:

You have two options when buying your own cable modem device:

  1. You can buy a standalone cable modem only which does not include WiFi router. In this case you will probably need a separate WiFi router to connect to your cable modem.
  2. You can buy a combo device which includes cable modem and WiFi router on the same box.

In this article we will discuss only option 1 above. In our opinion this is the best option for building your home network.

Even if you will have two separate devices (1 cable modem to connect to Suddenlink and 1 WiFi router for providing wireless access to your home gadgets), this setup offers the best performance and best flexibility.

For example, with option 1 above you will be able to connect the cable modem in one corner of your house (usually where the coaxial cable enters the house) and then run an ethernet cable to a more central location to connect your WiFi router to the cable modem. This means that the WiFi device will be at a central area thus providing better coverage. Also, a standalone WiFi router provides much better speed and coverage compared to the wifi router that is embedded in the same box as the cable modem.

So let’s start with our recommended and approved cable modems for Suddenlink Internet services. Have a look at each speed tier below to select the best device for your own home.

Best Modem For Suddenlink Gigabit Internet Service

Some areas in USA can enjoy the fastest Internet speed currently available from Suddenlink. This is the “1 Gig Internet” package (i.e 1000 Mbps) for download speeds and up to 50Mbps upload speed.

The newest cable communication standard that supports gigabit speeds is DOCSIS 3.1. There are only a few modems in the market that support DOCSIS 3.1 such as the Arris SB8200, the Motorola MB8600 and the Netgear CM1000.

However, at the time of this writing, Suddenlink does not support DOCSIS 3.1 modems on its network as stated from various sources such as here and here. However, make sure to talk to them for verifying this before making any purchase decisions.

The next best modem technology for gigabit speeds is DOCSIS 3.0. There are two types of such modems that can be used for the Gigabit service of Suddenlink: You can use either a 32×8 model or a 24×8 model (the numbers represent downstream and upstream bonded channels).

Although a 32×8 bonded channels modem will support higher download speeds, these modems are equipped with the buggy Intel Puma 6 chipset. This chipset is known to have latency issues thus creating communication problems in some circumstances (in VoIP and online gaming applications for example).

Our Recommendation

Netgear CM600

NETGEAR CM600 (24x8) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. Max Download speeds of 960Mbps. Certified for XFINITY by Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More (CM600-1AZNAS)
NETGEAR CM600 (24x8) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. Max Download speeds of 960Mbps. Certified for XFINITY by Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More (CM600-1AZNAS)
  • COMPATIBLE WITH ALL MAJOR CABLE INTERNET PROVIDERS: Including certification by Xfinity by Comcast, COX, and Spectrum. NOT compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DSL providers, DirecTV, DISH and any bundled voice service.
  • SAVE MONTHLY RENTAL FEES: Model CM600 replaces your cable modem saving you up to $168/yr in equipment rental fees.
  • BUILT FOR FAST SPEED: Best for cable provider plans up to 400 Mbps speed.

A 24×8 modem such as the Netgear CM600, is equipped with the reliable Broadcom chipset which does not suffer from any latency bugs. Our recommendation therefore for the 1 Gig Internet service is the CM600 from Netgear which has been successfully tested to work with Suddenlink with very good feedback and reviews.

Many people have tested this specific model for Suddenlink gigabit and are reporting speeds of around 600-800Mbps (max).

Here is what this user is saying about the CM600 from the dslreports forum:

“I have a CM600 on a 1000/50 plan and regularly get 700-750Mbps, “

Here is another testimonial for the CM600:

“I’m staying away from the Puma 6 Stuff. I usually get around 750/50 with the CM600. I’ve never had any slow downs and the CM600 has been rock solid. The fastest speeds I’ve gotten is 811/54. “

Arris Surfboard SB6190

  • 32 downstream x 8 upstream DOCSIS 3.0 bonded channels
  • 1 Gigabit Ethernet port for connecting to a Wi-Fi router or other device.

If your communication needs in your home do not include any latency sensitive applications (such as VoIP and online gaming), then you can go with the Arris SB6190 device which is a 32×8 modem.

Arris modems are a popular choice supported by almost any cable provider out there and will achieve the highest possible speeds for gigabit service. The SB6190 is also compatible with Suddenlink service and is also recommended from their own technical support for gigabit speeds. However, as I said before, it uses the buggy Puma 6 chipset (which might create subtle problems in some traffic conditions).

There are discussions out there that a new firmware update will be available in the future to fix the Puma6 problems. If this happens, then the Arris SB6190 will be a great choice for gigabit.

Both the CM600 and SB6190 have 1 LAN Gigabit port (10/100/1000Mbps) for connecting to a local computer or better yet to a home WiFi router. This wireless router DOES NOT need to be approved by Suddenlink. With that setup, you can ask Suddenlink to cancel their WiFi@Home service and thus save you $10/month on your bill !!

Best Modem For Suddenlink 400Mbps Internet Service

For this internet tier, Suddenlink offers up to 400Mbps download speed and up to 40Mbps upstream speed.

Again, a DOCSIS 3.0 modem with 24×8 bonded channels will be ideal. Remember that modems with 24×8 speeds are using the Broadcom chipset and not the Intel Puma6 therefore offering better reliability and less latency.

Modems having 24×8 bonded channels have a theoretical max download speed of 960Mbps. Ofcourse no modem actually achieves their theoretical max speed ever, but for the 400Mbps service a reliable 24×8 device will be more than enough.

Our Recommendation

Netgear CM600

NETGEAR CM600 (24x8) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. Max Download speeds of 960Mbps. Certified for XFINITY by Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter & More (CM600-1AZNAS)

From our research, the best option again for this tier is the Netgear CM600.

As this expert from dslreports.com is saying “If you’re getting the 400Mbps/40Mbps package, then the Netgear CM600 24×8 channel modem is a pretty well-tested option”

Netgear also lists this modem as fully supported on Suddenlink network for up to 500Mbps speed tier. As many people have found this model very stable, I would recommend it also for the 400Mbps service as well.

Best Modem For Suddenlink 100Mbps, 150Mbps, 200Mbps Internet Service

Here we have consolidated three Internet tiers into one section. Basically the 100Mbps, 150Mbps and 200Mbps Suddenlink packages can be served successfully with two great 16×4 DOCSIS3.0 modems that we are recommending below.

The theoretical download speeds of the two modems below are 686Mbps (max) which will work great with internet speeds between 100-200Mbps.

Our Recommendation

Arris SB6183

ARRIS SURFboard mAX Pro (16x4) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, approved for Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity & more

The models we are suggesting here are the Arris SB6183 and Netgear CM500.

These are well known devices and are fully supported on Suddenlink network.

Both modems above are equipped with the reliable and high-performance Broadcom BCM33843 chipset. Unlike the Puma6, this chipset does not suffer from any latency bugs and works great.

Getting also a WiFi router to connect to the gigabit LAN port of the modems above will offer you wireless connectivity to the whole home network devices.

Best Modem For Suddenlink 50Mbps and 75Mbps Internet Service

Here, a good 8×4 DOCSIS 3.0 modem will work great for either 50 or 75Mbps download speeds. Actually Suddenlink does not support anything less than 8×4 channels for their 50 and 75Mbps tier.

Our Recommendation

Arris SB6141

ARRIS SURFboard mAX Plus (8x4) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, approved for Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity & more
ARRIS SURFboard mAX Plus (8x4) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, approved for Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity & more

  • Wired modem only. Does not include Wi-Fi router or VoIP telephone adapter. Gigabit Ethernet port to connect to PC or router
  • 8 DOWNLOAD channels and 4 UPLOAD channels capable of up to 343 Mbps download and 131 UPLOAD speeds. Recommended for Internet plans up to 100 Mbps

The only solid choice for the above internet tiers is the ARRIS SURFboard SB6141. This model has been around for quite some time and has proved that its reliability and performance are guaranteed.

With around 24k reviews on Amazon giving it a rating around 4/5, I think it means something !!

Many customers in forums have also reported that this modem is fully compatible with Suddenlink as well, so it’s a great choice for either 50 or 75Mbps services.

I’m not sure when, but DOCSIS 3.1 modems are working on Suddenlink now, at least in the Pflugerville Texas area. I’m using a Motorola MB8600. I also tried one a few years ago without success (CM1000 I returned) and didn’t buy the Motorola until I had neighbors confirming that it worked.

Thanks a lot Charlie for the feedback.

All DOCSIS 3.1 modems are backwards compatible with DOCSIS 3.0, so in your case have you tried the MB8600 on an actual Gigabit DOCSIS3.1 line or on sub-gig DOCSIS3.0 line?
