A few years ago, Charter Communications acquired Time Warner and Bright House Networks and became the second largest Internet broadband provider in the USA.
Although many other internet providers charge their customers a rental fee for providing them a cable modem, the Charter Spectrum Internet service does not have a rental fee for modems.
However, there is a catch: Although Charter does not charge customers for the cable modem itself, they do charge a monthly fee if you want to use the WiFi on the modem device.
This means that they provide customers a combo Modem + WiFi router box (also known as Gateway Modem) and if you want to have the WiFi enabled and working you must pay a “usage” fee for the WiFi.
Therefore, many Charter Spectrum customers buy their own Cable Modem (or Combo Modem+WiFi Router) to avoid the extra WiFi rental fees.

Internet Up to 100 Mbps:Motorola MB7220 (MODEM ONLY) , Arris SBG6700-AC (COMBO Modem+Wifi)
You must know however that only specific compatible and approved Modems/Routers from Charter can be connected to their cable service (the same applies to many other cable providers as well).
In this article we have researched the best Wireless Router and Combo Modem/Router devices that are compatible with Spectrum Internet from Charter and present them below with their main characteristics, features, pros and cons etc, so let’s get started.

Cable Modem only Vs Combo Modem + WiFi Router
There are two options for customers that want to buy their own approved device:
- Cable Modem only device (you will need a separate WiFi router).
- Combined Modem + WiFi Router on the same box.
Cable Modem Only (with separate wireless Router)
If you choose the option above, you can buy an approved Cable Modem only and connect it to Charter Spectrum service.
Usually these cable modems have 1 Gigabit Ethernet port which you can connect to a separate wireless router as shown above. Therefore, all of your wireless and wired home devices (PC, smartphones, laptops etc) are connected via the WiFi router and share the cable Internet line from the cable modem.
This option is great for people who already have a WiFi router (this separate WiFi router DOES NOT need to be approved by Charter Spectrum. You can use whatever model you want).
Another advantage of this option is that you have more flexibility. You can place the cable modem at one corner of the house (e.g where the coaxial cable comes in from outside) and then place the WiFi router at the middle of the house (with an ethernet cable connected to the modem). This means you can have better wireless coverage for the whole house area.
Moreover, having a separate WiFi router can give you some extra advantages. For example, many modern routers are equipped with a USB port which you can use to connect an external USB hard disk for storing and sharing data over the network.
Also, by having separate modem and router devices allows you to update or change each device separately without any problems.
Combo Modem and WiFi Router on the same device (Modem Gateway)
As shown above, you can buy an approved Combo Modem+Router and connect it to the Charter service. This is usually a cheaper and simpler option compared to the previous one.
Moreover, you don’t need to run extra wires in the house and the management of the whole thing is easier. If your house or apartment is small to medium size (single floor or maximum two floors) this option will offer adequate wireless coverage as well.
The above combination is what Spectrum offers to their customers. That is, they give you a combo modem/router unit but they charge a monthly fee if you want to use the WiFi service (called “In-Home WiFi”).
Minimum Specs Suggested by Spectrum
Whatever option you choose to go from the above two, Charter Spectrum suggests the following minimum specifications if you want to buy your own devices.
For Cable Modems
- At least DOCSIS 3.0
- Minimum 16 bonded channels (for download) e.g 16×4 DOCSIS 3.0
- Included in the Charter Authorized Devices List.
For Wireless Routers
- Recommended to be an 802.11ac (newest WiFi standard).
- Recommended to have Gigabit LAN ports (10/100/1000 Mbps) to connect wired home devices.
- At least Dual-Band WiFi (2.4 Ghz and 4 Ghz).
Now let’s move to the section of reviewing the best modems/routers for Charter. We have categorized the devices according to the Internet Speed tiers offered by Spectrum and also according to the two setups described above (standalone modem or combo modem/router):

Some FAQ about Charter Spectrum
Does Google WiFi work with Spectrum?
Google WiFi is one of the popular mesh wireless systems with Dual-band AC1200 Wave2 WiFi speed. Being a WiFi router, Google WiFi will work fine with Charter Spectrum as long as you already have a separate cable modem installed.
Google WiFi can’t be connected directly to Spectrum connection. You must have a DOCSIS compatible cable modem connected to Spectrum and then you can connect a Google WiFi device to this modem.
What is Spectrum “In-Home WiFi” ?
When you register for Spectrum Internet service, you will see an option of getting “Home WiFi” for $5 per month.
By default, the basic package includes a free standalone cable modem only. However, when you order the “Home WiFi” option (either as a new customer or as an existing customer), Spectrum will either send you a new WiFi router or install a combo modem/router to your premises.
So basically the “In Home WiFi” service is for people who don’t want to buy their own wireless router and mess around with configuring and troubleshooting this device. However, you will be paying Spectrum a monthly fee of $5 just for having this wireless capability.
On the other hand, you can buy your own decent WiFi router between $50-$80 which you can just plug-in by yourself and avoid the wifi fee.
How to Login to Spectrum Router Device ?
If you want to login to the administration interface of your Spectrum Router (I mean the one provided to you by Charter) for any reason (for changing SSID passwords, configuring settings etc), then follow the steps below:
Step 1:
First, make sure you are connected to the WiFi network preferably using a laptop.
Step 2:
Open your browser and connect to the following address (URL):
Depending to which model you have, the Login settings are different:
- For Arris Devices: Connect to URL: 192.168.0.1 with Username: admin / Password: password
- For Askey Devices: Connect to URL: 192.168.1.1 with Username: admin / Password: admin
- For Netgear Devices: Connect to URL: www.routerlogin.net with Username: admin / Password: password
- For Sagemcom Devices: Connect to URL: 192.168.1.1 with Username: admin / Password: admin
- For Technicolor Devices: Connect to URL: 192.168.0.1 with Username: admin / Password: password
- For Ubee Devices: Connect to URL: 192.168.0.1 with Username: admin / Password: (on device label)
Conclusion
Knowing which device is perfect for you and your preferences is essential if you want a seamless internet service.
First you need to decide if you prefer a separate Cable modem and WiFi router (two boxes) or a combo modem/router on one box. The first option is more flexible (and has better performance) while the second option is for people who want simplicity and less management overheads (and less wires in the home).
Hopefully, this article will help you in choosing the right device as per your needs.
Hi, thank you for your best reviews and excellent format. My house is a 7550 feet place. I am using a Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 Smart Wi-Fi router model: R6700 and half of my house place cannot get Wi-Fi. I want to buy a Wi-Fi extender/ Booster but am not sure if is going to affect the speed, as I would like to live streaming HD Videos and Gaming?
Hi Sam,
For such a big house I would recommend a WiFi mesh system. The Netgear Orbi RBK53 is the best choice for your house area. The Orbi mesh system has a dedicated backhaul wireless connection between units which does not slow down the network even if you are streaming HD etc.
If I get spectrum internet with only 100mbps and I get the modum wifi combo motorolla mg7550 16×4 would that be overkill? Do I have to get one that matches my download speed? Is it a bad idea to get one that can handle more than I need?
Derek,
Yes, you can use the Motorola MG7550 with your 100 mbps internet service. Actually it is a good idea to have a modem supporting above your current internet speed in order to have room for expansion.
What do you think about the linksys mr9000 as a wireless router plugged into an ArrisTM 1602 modem on Spectrum?
Joe,
Yes, that is a great setup. The Linksys MR9000 is a very high-speed router (AC3000) and will work great with the Arris modem and Spectrum connection. This Linksys router will even work great with Gigabit Internet speeds if you decide to upgrade later on.
I have Spectrum 400mbps service and live in a 2 story home where consistent coverage is a big issue. I’m getting a mesh system but not sure what the best one would be — Eero, Nest, or Asus? Does Spectrum have Wifi-6 in NYC?
Allison, I’d go with Asus AiMesh since they have a very good security protection solution (AiProtection) offered with their WiFi routers.
In order to get WiFi6 with Spectrum you need to ask them if they offer a combo device (modem + WiFi on the same box) which supports WiFi 6.
The other option is to buy your own cable modem and a separate WiFi6 router.
Hi,
I am not tech savvy. I have a Motorola Surfboard Modem and a ASUS RT_AC86U Router Dual Band 2.4 Ghz/5Ghz. I am looking for an extender because my phone goes in and out as I move from one room to another in the house. My house is 3000 sq feet. I have a main floor and then basement. I would like good reception up and downstairs. I think I should get a mesh system, which I am not sure what that is. I just want better reception on my phone. Any recommendations would be welcome since I don’t understand and am not tech savvy.
Hi,
I posted earlier but missed putting that I have Spectrum internet service with 200 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up.
Rose
Rose, since you already have an ASUS RT AC86U Aimesh router, you can go with an ASUS Aimesh Extender device such as this one here: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Wireless-802-11AC-Repeater-RP-AC1900/dp/B07VPL6BL6/
Another trick from me: Connect to the 2.4GHz SSID band with your phone instead of the 5GHz band. The 2.4 has longer range.
Harris
Hi! I’m a Spectrum customer in NYC and am looking to buy a new router. The modem Spectrum gave me is an Arris TM1602A MTA.
What is the best router for this modem?
Ariane, which router model to choose mostly depends on factors like Internet speed plan, house area, how many floors etc.
The Arris TM1602A MTA is a DOCSIS 3.0 modem (16×4 channels) so I assume your internet plan is less than 200-300 Mbps?
If that is the case, then a good WiFi router model is TP-Link Archer A7 or the D-link DIR-882
Hello.
Which router/modem can I use when I want to use my landline with spectrum ?
Spectrum plan 400 mbps.
House 900 sqft. Need to have Wi-Fi access in my backyard ( 6,100sqft lot)
Thanks for your advise.
Dani
Daniela I’d suggest to get a mesh wifi system with 1 router and 2 satellites in order to cover the backyard as well.
Have a look at Netgear Orbi models, TP-link deco models (cheaper) etc
