One of the greatest things about traveling is the sheer freedom it provides. But it doesn’t always feel that way when you need to bring your car along for the entire trip. Even worse, people often discover that their personal vehicle is a poor match for the terrain they want to explore.
Turo has changed how people look at that common problem. The app lets people find, rent, or share the perfect vehicle for wherever they find themselves.
Whether that’s another city or another country. But just as there’s more than one vehicle to match different situations there’s more than one app that can provide a similar experience to Turo.
The following twelve apps and sites all bring a unique twist to car sharing and renting. They are similar to Turo and all provide an easy and flexible way to share or rent a car.
1) Gig Car Share
Gig Car Share operates in the Bay Area, Seattle, San Francisco and Sacramento. It’s particularly noteworthy for its eco-friendly take on the idea.
All of the Gig Car Share vehicles in the Bay Area are hybrids. And the vehicles in Sacramento take the idea even further by being entirely electric.
There’s no signup cost and users are allowed to use one-way trips. There’s no need to return the cars to their original location after arriving at the destination either. The app even provides free parking in designated “HomeZone” areas.
2) Getaround
The Getaround carsharing platform aims to make it simple for people to either rent a car or share their car.
What’s more, there’s no subscription needed and people can use it whenever they want.
At the moment the app is only available in the US. But Getaround will soon add their “Getaround Europe” functionality into the main Getaround app.
3) ZipCar
ZipCar has a huge coverage area. The app will function in over 500 cities in the US, Canada, Spain, France, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Taiwan.
The functionality is further aided by the fact that it’s associated with Avis Budget Group, Inc.
This provides a lot of extra power to leverage their system within a wide range of different locations. Users can choose between a number of different vehicle types.
The app even integrates with the ZipCar system by offering extra functionality. For example, users can find their vehicle by using the app to honk its horn. The app can also lock or unlock a rented Zipcar.
4) Virtuo
Virtuo’s biggest feature stems from an emphasis on luxury cars. For example, if you’d love to get behind the wheel of a Mercedes then this app might have you covered.
However, the range of available luxury cars varies on a region-by-region basis. Mercedes rentals in the UK are available as a Mercedes A-Class or a Mercedes GLA.
Additionally, the time allowed with the cars can range from one to ninety days. This extended up to 150 miles per day. If you’re in France there are even more options. Virtuo provides rentals of BMW, Kona, and Peugeot within that region.
5) RENTAL24H
Rental24H differs from many of the other apps by functioning as more of an aggregation rental service.
This means that you’re not actually renting a car specifically from a single company.
You can instead use the app to compare nearby rental options from over 40,000 locations. The wide range of locations makes it an ideal way to find rental vehicles when traveling. What’s more, you can be sure that you’re finding the best price on a vehicle rental.
6) SHARE NOW
SHARE NOW operates through a free-floating operation model. It ultimately aims to make it easy to just open up the app and find a car that matches your needs.
The rental period can last anywhere from a single day to thirty. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the vehicles do need to be returned to a home area when the rental period is over.
SHARE NOW operates in eight different countries. This includes Amsterdam, Berlin, Budapest, Cologne, Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart, Madrid, Milan, Rome, Turin, Paris, and Vienna.
7) Free2Move
Free2Move is a carsharing and rental app that is continually expanding into new areas. Some of the major cities it supports include Lisbon, Madrid, Washington DC, and Paris. Portland will soon be available as well.
But the app doesn’t simply work within those areas. In total, Free2Move supports over 170 different countries. These include Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and the UK.
The app also offers a flexible rental duration that can last anywhere from one day to a full month.
8) Enterprise CarShare
Enterprise CarShare is a carsharing service that offers some good deals. However, there are also a few catches when compared to most of the other options.
One of the biggest restrictions simply comes from the fact that you’ll need to be an Enterprise CarShare member to use the app.
The app itself is fairly minimalistic when compared to some of the other options. Users can rent a vehicle with the app and extend reservation time.
The app can also be used to submit fuel receipts. But the app won’t provide more advanced functionality beyond those simple functions. At the same time, this simplicity can itself be seen as a feature for people who simply want to have an easy “reserve and go” experience.
9) HyreCar
HyreCar is a full carsharing marketplace for both rideshare and delivery drivers. The service extends to all fifty states in the US.
The service leans fairly heavily into the idea of working with major ridesharing services. This makes it a great way to earn some extra money with them even when you’re away from your own hometown or vehicle.
The app also makes it easy to earn some extra cash by sharing a vehicle on HyreCar. The service’s rideshare protection plan ensures users can feel safe when leaving their vehicle in HyreCar’s capable hands.
10) SIXT
SIXT provides users with a wide variety of options. First and foremost, it provides rental options in over 100 different countries. Ride hailing service is also available in a vast number of different countries and locations.
Flexible carsharing should appear within the app fairly soon as well. At the moment SIXT has over 2,200 stations and that number is continually growing.
SIXT also provides options to easily sort through the available car types. This includes options like minivan, truck, automatic, or coupe.
You can even specify the number of seats that you’ll need. Once that’s been done the options can be further sorted by either price or popularity.
11) Carla Car Rental
Carla Car Rental is a car rental aggregator which lets users easily search through over 900 different companies to find the perfect ride.
The app even makes sure that rental companies are actually open. So there’s no need to worry about heading off to a rental company that isn’t open for business yet.
The rental search will also help users narrow the choices down by location proximity. This helps to ensure people can find options that are as close to them as possible.
While the reservations come through another company, everything related to making reservations can be done through the app. This even includes getting an instant confirmation emailed to you.
12) Cars-scanner
Cars-scanner acts as a global car rental broker in over 175 different countries. Some of the most popular rental areas include Great Britain, the US, UAE, Israel, Canada, and Thailand.
Rentals are especially easy to book from airports in any major hub. It’s important to keep in mind that this isn’t the same type of book-and-go service seen in some of the other options.
Users are expected to book a car rental in advance. If rentals are canceled within 24 hours of the expected pickup then there will be a 50 EUR fee.
