When comparing the Arris SVG2482AC vs Netgear C7100V vs Motorola MT7711 cable modems there is one winner in our opinion with another model coming as close second. In this article we will discuss the three voice modems and explain why one of them is slightly better than the other two.
The top internet and cable service providers offer bundle services to customers which include Internet Access, Telephone Service (Voice) and TV Service (Video) under one common monthly bill which is usually cheaper than getting the services separately.
These bundles are commonly called “Triple Play services” and in the US are offered by Comcast, AT&T, Charter Spectrum and many other providers.
While these services typically include a suitable modem, Comcast and other providers typically charge a monthly rental fee if you get their own Triple-play modem device.
The provided modems may allow you to use your services without any major issues, but they are not your only option.
You may also purchase your own modem, thus saving on monthly rental cost of the device. However, the modem needs to be approved by your provider as they want to make sure its compatible with their services.
Moreover, you must keep in mind that with Triple-play bundles which include also Telephone service, the cable modem must support voice communication (VoIP) and also have suitable ports for connecting your telephone devices. These modems are called “voice cable modems”.
The Netgear C7100V, Arris SVG2482AC, and Motorola MT7711 are three of the most popular voice cable modems approved by Comcast (and other providers) for their Triple Play or Xfinity Voice services.
The three combo modems above offer fast speeds (both on the cable service and on the WiFi access as well) and allow you to avoid the monthly modem rental fees that service providers typically charge.
Before deciding to continue using the modem supplied by your provider or buy your own, we believe that one of the voice modems we are discussing in this article is a great choice to replace the device provided by Comcast Xfinity.
Let’s compare the three models to see why we’ll recommend the Netgear C7100V for the Comcast triple-play service.

Last update on 2024-05-01 at 09:39 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API
The Netgear C7100V Nighthawk is a modem/router combo that can be used for Triple Play services. This means it offers connections for internet, voice, and cable TV. It also features a sleek, simple design, along with these technical specs:
- AC1900 (802.11ac) Wi-Fi for a maximum of 1900 Mbps wireless speed.
- Dual-band WiFi
- Uses the reliable Broadcom BCM3384Z chipset.
- Fully compatible with Comcast XFINITY Internet and Voice services (and others as well).
- 24×8 DOCSIS 3.0 channel bonding (up to 960Mbps max download cable speed)
- 1.6GHz processor
- 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports
- 2 USB ports (use them to connect USB hard disk or printers for example)
- 2 telephone lines (VoIP ports) for RJ-11 telephone jacks.
- Optional battery backup.
- No need to get an external WiFi router (everything is included in one box).
- Best for Internet tiers between 200Mbps and 500Mbps.
Cable Modem Capabilities
As this is a combo device, it includes a cable modem and WiFi router on the same box. The first area to explore is the cable modem capabilities.
With the Netgear C7100V, you get 8 upstream channels and 24 downstream channels, with a maximum download speed of 960 Mbps.
While you cannot make slower connections faster, this modem can support the fastest speeds offered by Comcast (except the Gigabit service) and other service providers.
Actually for Comcast Xfinity, this model is recommended for Internet tiers between 200Mbps and 500Mbps.
WiFi Router Capabilities
The C7100V includes also a wireless router, which means that you can connect multiple WiFi devices to share the cable line. This model is part of the popular Netgear Nighthawk product line which is the flagship communication line of Netgear.
Its support for the dual-band AC1900 Wi-Fi communication standard allows the router to work on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels, with a total (theoretical) wireless speed of 1.9Gbps.
This Netgear router also offers exceptional range. When setting up a modem/router in your home, ensuring that you have a strong signal throughout in the house is often a challenge. The C7100V uses the Nighthawk’s beamforming+ feature to maximize its range and provide a stronger signal to your devices.
With a typical router, the Wi-Fi signal spreads evenly. When multiple people are using devices in one area of the house, you may experience delays and slower speeds with a standard router. The beamforming feature directs the signal towards your Wi-Fi devices, eliminating any signal strength issues.
Other Hardware Capabilities
The modem and router features of the Netgear C7100V are useful for any internet service. However, with Triple Play plans you also have telephone services. The C7100V supports these services by offering two telephone connections (RJ11 ports) and also by supporting the VoIP communication required with the provider. No additional equipment is required.
Having also 2 USB ports is another advantage of this model compared to Arris and Motorola products which do not have any working USB ports. In my opinion having a USB port on your wireless router allows some very useful capabilities like connecting a USB hard disk for file sharing and backup, connecting a USB printer for network printing over the wireless etc.
This device is powered by the Broadcom BCM3384Z chipset which is very reliable and does not suffer from the latency problems of the Intel Puma 6 that is powering the Arris SVG2482AC device.
Although there were some firmware updates for the Puma 6, there are still reports that this chipset still has latency and Internet connection problems. So that’s another big advantage of the Netgear device over the Arris we are comparing here.
Overall, the Netgear C7100V possesses the features that you need a modem/router combo to have. It also includes telephony support for using the VOIP services that are bundled into the Triple Play offering by Comcast. You get a reliable router with fast speeds and USB ports for connecting USB printers or hard drives.
Another Great Voice Modem Option (CM1150V)
If you just want a standalone voice cable modem without the WiFi capabilities, the Netgear CM1150V is the newest DOCSIS3.1 voice modem by Netgear (available as of January 2019).
- Supports internet speed up to 2Gbps. Certified with Xfinity Internet & Voice Plans up to 800Mbps speed. Future speed with Xfinity is subject to change
- Works with any WiFi router. Connect any WiFi router to this modem’s Ethernet port to support all your wireless devices
- Save monthly rental fees. Model CM1150V replaces your cable modem saving you up to $150/yr in equipment rental fees

The above device will work with Xfinity Internet and Voice service (it includes 2 telephone ports and 4 Gigabit LAN ports) and supports the newest DOCSIS3.1 standard which is required for Gigabit Internet services.
Have in mind though that with the above you will need an additional WiFi router for providing internet access to all of your home client devices.

The Arris SVG2482AC is also a compatible option for supporting your Comcast Xfinity Triple Play services and its included also in their compatibility list of supported voice modems.
It includes many of the features found on the Netgear C7100V as shown below:
- AC1750 (802.11ac) Wi-Fi for a maximum wireless speed of 1750 Mbps
- Dual-band Wifi
- DOCSIS 3.0 (24×8) channel bonding (up to 960Mbps max download cable speed)
- RDK-B technology
- 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports
- 2 telephone lines (RJ11) for VoIP telephony
- Optional battery backup.
- No need to get an external WiFi router (everything is included in one box).
- Best for Internet tiers between 200Mbps and 500Mbps.
The cable technology, channel bonding, ethernet ports, and telephone lines all match the features found on the Netgear and Motorola models.
One of the few details that stands out with the Arris SURFBoard modem/router combo is the use of RDK-B technology.
RDK-B is an open source technology that is used to give cable internet providers a simple software standard for developing new features. These features are easier to integrate into the router, providing users with the latest products or services from their cable internet provider.
Cable Modem Capabilities
The modem component of the Arris SVG2482AC also offers 24 downstream channels and 8 upstream, like the Netgear C7100V and Motorola MT7711, by using the DOCSIS 3.0 standard.
WiFi Router Capabilities
However, the wireless speeds offered varies. With the Netgear and Motorola, you get a total max speed of 1.9 Gbps on the WiFi, while the Arris modem/router combo offers 1.75 Gbps.
The coverage of the router is comparable to other routers in this range. You should not have any problem maintaining a strong signal throughout your house, depending on the size and layout of your house and where you place the router.
Other Hardware Capabilities
One of the potential drawbacks of the Arris SVG2482AC is the chipset. The Arris modem/router combo uses a Puma 6 chip, which has received a lot of negative feedback from users in the past couple of years. Many people have experienced slower internet speeds and latency issues with the modems that use this chipset, even after installing the latest firmware update.
Another issue is the lack of USB input for added storage or network printers. When examining the design of the Arris modem, you may notice that there are two USB ports on the back. These USB ports are not designed for connecting USB storage devices or printers. They are intended for service technicians.
Some people also dislike the interface of the Arris modem when changing settings, such as their modem password. It can be difficult to navigate the menus and find the settings that you want to change.

This is another 3-in-1 voice modem that is compatible with Comcast Xfinity and Xfinity X1 services with VoIP (and many other providers as well).
It is a newer model (released mid-2018) compared to the two previous products which were released in 2016 and 2017.
Here are the main specs of this device:
- AC1900 (802.11ac) Wi-Fi for a maximum of 1900 Mbps wireless speed.
- Dual-band WiFi
- Uses the reliable Broadcom BCM3384ZU chipset.
- Fully compatible with Comcast XFINITY Internet and Voice services (plus many other providers).
- 24×8 DOCSIS 3.0 channel bonding (up to 960Mbps max download cable speed)
- 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports
- Power Boost and Anybeam technology on the WiFi extend the range within the legal wireless power limits.
- 2 telephone lines (VoIP ports) for RJ-11 telephone jacks.
- Optional battery backup.
- No need to get an external WiFi router (everything is included in one box).
- Best for Internet tiers up to 400Mbps.
Cable Modem Capabilities
Just like the previous two modems, this one is a DOCSIS3.0 device with 24×8 bonded channels. The only difference is that the vendor states that this device works for up to 400Mbps Internet tier of Xfinity while the two other modems above can work up to 500Mbps tier.
WiFi Router Capabilities
This is also an AC1900 capable modem just like the Netgear device. It has 3 internal antennas which are power boosted to extend the WiFi range as much as possible. Using Anybeam beamforming also allows better direction of signal thus increasing performance and range.
Other Hardware Capabilities
The most important hardware component of a cable modem is the chipset used. The MT7711 uses the reliable and stable Broadcom BCM3384ZU (like the Netgear model) therefore ensuring stable performance and operation.
The main disadvantage of this device is the lack of USB ports (the Netgear modem has 2).
Comparison Between Arris SVG2482AC vs Netgear C7100V
The Netgear C7100V and the Arris SVG2482AC modems include several similar features. They are both approved for use with Comcast Triple Play services and Xfinity bundles. They also include four ethernet ports and two telephone lines. However, there are also several significant differences that make one option a slightly better choice.
One of the most important differences between the Netgear C7100V and Arris SVG2482AC modems is the speed of the Wi-Fi. The Netgear offers slightly faster speeds with AC1900 in contrast to AC1750 of the Arris model.
Reliability is also a concern when choosing a modem and the C7100V features a more dependable design. It uses the Broadcom chipset, which is more reliable compared to the Puma 6 chipset used in the Arris modem. The C7100V also includes a powerful 1.6GHz processor to help boost the speed of the Wi-Fi connection, wired connection, and WAN-to-LAN connections.
The C7100V also includes two usable USB ports, which are not included with the Arris modem. With the two USB ports, you can connect network devices, such as a USB printer or a USB external hard drive thus having a storage device for backup and file sharing over the wireless network. While the Arris modem includes two USB ports, they are only intended for use by service technicians.
The Netgear C7100V and the Arris SVG2482AC also have different user interfaces. When you need to adjust settings, monitor network use, ban devices, or change your password, an easy-to-use interface is preferred. However, the Arris GUI is confusing and hard to navigate compared to the Nighthawk GUI.
You should not need to contact a service technician for help changing your router password. Luckily, the C7100V includes a simple GUI that most users can navigate without any issues.
These features help the Netgear C7100V stand out compared to the Arris SVG2482AC. While these are both quality devices, the C7100V has the advantage. It provides faster speeds, better reliability, and additional I/O ports.
Comparison Between Motorola MT7711 vs Netgear C7100V
We believe that the Netgear C7100V is slightly better compared to Motorola MT7711 which comes as close second between the three models in this article.
The main reason is that Netgear has 2 USB ports while the Motorola modem does not have any USB ports. This is the only main difference between the two devices.
Moreover, the C7100V is a more mature product (being in the marker longer than the MT7711) which means that any bugs identified so far have been fixed in the firmware.
Additionally, if you have a 500Mbps service from Xfinity you will be able to use only the Netgear model. The Motorola device works for up to 400Mbps.
Having the above in mind, we believe the Netgear option is slightly better compared to Motorola.
Conclusion – Which Voice Modem is the Best Choice for Comcast Xfinity?
Click to See our Recommended Product
If you decide to replace the modem provided by Comcast for their Triple Play services or Xfinity bundles, you need to purchase an approved modem. When you install the modem, Comcast requires you to contact them so that they can verify the details of your modem.
The Netgear C7100V, Arris SVG2482AC and Motorola MT7711 are currently few of the modem/router combos that offer a complete solution for replacing the modem supplied by Comcast. While there are other modem/router combos that are compatible with Comcast internet services, they do not include the telephony lines for using the phone services.
These three modems possess many of the same features, along with a few notable differences. The differences are what help make it easier to choose between these three options.
For the reasons we have explained in the previous section the Netgear C7100V is a slightly better choice for a voice cable modem compared to the other two products. The most notable differences in my opinion include the Broadcom chipset of the Netgear compared to the flawed Puma 6 of the Arris and also the 2xUSB ports included in Netgear which are not present on the Arris and Motorola.
Of course you should have in mind that the C7100V product is slightly more expensive than the other three models but in our opinion its worth it.
Josephine Perrine says
I purchased the recommended modem and COMCAST couldn’t activate it. Said it was outdated technology. Now I am going to buy the Motorola. Disappointed that it doesn’t have the usb ports.
BlogAdmin says
Thanks for your comment. If you are talking about the Netgear C7100V model, this is a DOCSIS3.0 device and is not an outdated technology. Maybe the cable service in your area is not very good quality, that’s why Comcast could not activate it.
In any case, the Motorola MT7711 is also a great choice with the only difference of not having USB ports.
Banford says
I am trying to decide between the Netgear C7100V and the Motorola MT7711. Of course, having the USB ports on the Netgear is an advantage, but the Netgear is $100 more than the Motorola on Amazon. Is it worth it? Is there any difference in Wi-Fi performance? I have a large home, and need the best Wi-Fi signal possible.
BlogAdmin says
For larger homes, I would suggest the Motorola MT7711 as I believe will provide better WiFi coverage than the Netgear. The only disadvantage of MT7711 is the lack of USB but other than that its a very reliable and solid choice with very good wifi performance.
Robert G Sattan says
Are both the NETGEAR C7100V and the MOTOROLA MT7711 capable of handling Comcast Xfinity Gigabyte package. I have the Super TP package that only comes with the Gigabyte. Thx
BlogAdmin says
Robert,
No, these modems do not support Gigabit internet speed. You will need DOCSIS 3.1 modem for this speed tier.
Harris
Mr Coach says
This article is not correct in regards to the Motorola MT7711. The Motorola MT7711 doesn’t require Comcast XFINITY service. It will absolutely work with other internet providers.
BlogAdmin says
@ Mr Coach
At the time of writing this article that was the case regarding the MT7711.
Now, you are correct. The Motorola device works also with other providers as well.
Larry Greenberg says
Harris,
Thank you for your insightful recommendations and comments.
I am switching from AT&T to Xfinity, primarily because they support 1Gbps Internet in my area. I am looking for a modem/router combo that supports triple-play, as well as supports the max 1 Gbps speed for the internet. You mentioned you need a DOCSIS 3.1 to make use of the 1Gbps Internet. Do you have any recommendations for a device? I need at least 1x telephone line, and 4 Ethernet ports (I can use 2 ethernet ports, but will then need a switch as well).
Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
Larry Greenberg says
Harris,
Thank you for your insightful comments and recommendations.
I am looking to switch service providers from AT&T to Xfinity primarily due to the higher Internet speeds – 1Gbps offered by Xfinity. I am looking for a modem that supports triple-play but that which I can also maximize my Internet 1 Gbps offering. You mentioned previously in order to support 1Gbps Internet, you will need a DOCSIS 3.1 modem.
I ill need a modem that offers, 1 x telephone line, and 4 gig Ethernet ports. 2 ports will do, however, that would mean I would need a switch. Do you know of any DOCSIS 3.1 modems you could recommend?
Harris Andrea says
Larry, for Gigabit DOCSIS3.1 modems with Voice support, there are currently only a couple options available (working with Xfinity). These are:
ARRIS T25 and Netgear CM1150V
I would recommend the ARRIS T25 although it has 2xGigabit ports. It looks more stable currently than the Netgear model and is fully supported by Xfinity.
Hope that helps.
Harris
Larry Greenberg says
Harris,
Thank you. This is very helpful.
As the ARRIS T25 does not support WiFi, I will need a router. Could you recommend a good router that works seamlessly with the ARRIS T25? Any router will work I know but looking to have the same products as easier to fault find if there is a need.
Much thanks.
Larry Greenberg says
Harris,
Thank you for the recommendation. This is very helpful.
In the case of both modems, neither supports Wi-Fi and there will be a need for a router. As the ARRIS T25 is your recommended modem, can you also suggest a router that would work best for this model? I am sure most routers will work just fine, however, any product you would recommend for a home of approx 2,100 Sq Ft? Another ARRIS product?
Much thanks.
Harris Andrea says
Larry, as you said most WiFi routers will work fine. In order however to take full advantage of the Gigabit Internet line, I would suggest a new generation WiFi router (WiFi 6 / 802.ax routers). Some examples include the TP-Link Archer AX50 (pretty good price), or the NETGEAR Nighthawk AX8.
Larry Greenberg says
Harris,
Excellent. Thank you so much.
Larry Greenberg says
Harris,
If you do not mind, I have another question for you.
I have been reviewing the TP-Link Archer AX50 (AX3000) and the TP-Link Archer (AX1500). The AX1500 is approx. half the price of the AX3000. Outside of the 3Gbps (AX3000) and the 1.5Gbps (AX1500), are there major differences that account for the price difference of the units? Are the differences significant enough for my 1Gbps Internet from Xfinity?
Thank you, again.
Harris Andrea says
In addition to the WiFi speed difference, the AX50 (AX3000) device offers also free lifetime subscription to TP-Link HomeCare which is a security protection service powered by Trend Micro.
Ed P says
We’re in September now, anything better out there now than the recommended combo of ARRIS T25 & TP-Link Archer AX50 (AX3000) on Xfinity Gig Speed?
Harris Andrea says
Ed, if you want a combo device which also supports Voice (Gigabit plans) then yes only the Arris T25 and Netgear CM1150v are currently supported on Xfinity.
Ed P says
Harris, thank you!
So you recommend the Netgear CM1150v over the TP-Link Archer AX50 for my setup?
Harris Andrea says
Ed, I don’t know exactly your setup. Can you explain?
The TP Link AX50 is only a WiFi device. You will need also a cable modem to connect to Xfinity service.
If you already have the cable modem, then the AX50 router is a great choice because it supports the newest WiFi 6 generation and also offers free security protection.
Ed P says
Harris, I have 1 GIG Internet Service with Xfinity using their Modem/Router Combo @ $14.00 per month. I was trying to avoid the rental fee and wanted your recommendation on the best combo (Cable Modem & WiFi Router) available for purchase at this time.
I understand I’ll have to make a purchase for both but it will eventually pay itself off if I keep for a good while.
Thank you again!
Harris Andrea says
Ed,
If you want to get a combo device (modem + WiFi router on the same box) for Xfinity then I always recommend the Netgear C7800. It is fully supported by Comcast and runs on AC3000 wifi speed for is needed to fully utilize the Gigabit line
Now, if you want to buy separate modem and router devices, then the Motorolla MB8600 is great as a modem. For WiFi router, get anything with at least AC3000 speed or maybe get a WiFi6 device (newest technology) such as TP-Link Archer AX50 or anything from Netgear.
Hope that helps.
Harris
